Good Oral Health
As with other parts of the body, it is important to have a good standard of oral hygiene. Maintaining good oral health can be as simple as sticking to a daily routine that includes brushing, flossing and rinsing.
Brushing, flossing and rinsing
Dentists recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice a day for a period of at least two minutes each time. You should also floss on a daily basis and you may benefit from regularly using an antibacterial mouthwash. You should use a toothbrush with a small to medium sized head in order to reach all the teeth and gum areas; the bristles should be fairly soft. You should brush firmly but not to the point where brushing is painful; hard brushing can be harmful and can cause the enamel surface to be eroded. Flossing can help to remove any plaque or food particles, which have become trapped on the gum line or between the teeth; mouthwash can also help to eradicate these substances which may have been missed during brushing. Mouthwash also helps to freshen breath.
Diet
Diet has a serious impact on dental health. When you eat a food that is sugary or acidic it wears the enamel on the surface down slightly; when the enamel is damaged the tooth is exposed to infection and can become decayed. Your intake of sugary and acidic foods and drinks should be moderated as they often have no nutritional benefits and are harmful for the teeth. Eating and drinking foods and drinks that are rich in calcium will help to strengthen the teeth; these substances include milk, cheese and yoghurt. Having a healthy diet will boost the body’s immune system, which will reduce the likelihood of suffering from an illness; this applied to conditions affecting the mouth, as well as the body.
Visiting the Dentist
It is recommended that you visit the dentist for a routine check-up every 6-12 months. Visiting the dentist regularly will allow them to assess your general oral health, monitor the progress of any pre-existing conditions and diagnose any new problems; if these issues are dealt with early there is less chance of them developing into a more serious condition. Dental treatments can improve the aesthetic appearance of your teeth which will make you feel more confident as well as easing any aches or pains you may have been experiencing.
Benefits of Good Oral Health
Those who have good oral health have been proven to have higher self-esteem and greater confidence in social situations. Your smile is one of the most striking features on your face and therefore if your teeth are straight and white you will feel more attractive and confident. Having good oral health will also reduce the risk of suffering from illnesses such as tooth decay, gum disease and more serious conditions such as mouth cancer.
