Disability Confident: National Inclusion Week blog

We're really proud to be an accredited disability confident employer. The disability confident scheme aims to help employers to successfully employ and retain disabled people and those with health conditions.

Over 10% of RBH employees have a disability. We're determined to do all that we can to help disabled people seek employment with RBH, and to support our disabled employees. We continue to measure our progress and to see whether there is more that we can do to make RBH an accessible place to work. This article provides a snapshot of some of the steps we have taken to make sure that we are truly an inclusive employer.

Demonstrating that we are an inclusive employer starts with our recruitment process. We display the "disability confident" logo prominently on our website, on our jobs section, and in our offices for all visitors and employees to see. We have also installed the "browse aloud" facility on our website to provide additional accessibility.

We are happy to meet with potential applicants to discuss the adjustments we can offer, both during the application process and should an applicant be offered a position. We guarantee that disabled candidates meeting the essential criteria will be offered an interview, and candidates are specifically asked in our invitations to interview whether they require any adjustments, which we are happy to provide. We proactively offer adjustments and ensure that we include this in our appointment offer letters. All our managers undertake recruitment and selection training to ensure that they are fully aware of our procedures and offer.

Our office facilities are modern and open plan, with fully accessible facilities. Our Services For All panel were fully involved with the co-design of our Customer Service Centre at St Alban's House, including undertaking an audit of accessibility. All employees can access membership of the Medicash health care plan, and our flexible working scheme operates from 7am to 7pm for most employees. Our HR team meet with our Employee Support Group to discuss barriers, suggestions and improvements, and we undertake "access to work" assessments to accomodate colleagues who have a newly-diagnosed disability.

We've also already learned this week about some of the support available for RBH employees, including the Employee Support Group and our new mental health champions. We know that there is always more that we can do. We've been working with experts from Inclusive Employers, Housing Diversity Network and HQN to help us to adopt best practice, including an action plan to accompany our new equality and diversity strategy.

Apprenticeship Opportunity

Our partners, Groundwork in Bolton, Bury, Oldham and Rochdale, are looking for two exceptional people to work for their ‘Green Team’ to implement land improvement projects on behalf of RBH, while working towards a Level 2 qualification in Work-based Horticulture and Landscaping.

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop hard and soft landscaping skills, study for a qualification, and work in a friendly and supportive environment, all whilst earning a real Living Wage!

Applications close on Friday 9th March. Visit the Groundwork BBOR website to find out more and to apply!
