Smallbridge Social Value

Entry to construction course boosts employment

We've teamed up with our contractor Galliford Try and with Antrec and the Growth Company to support local people to gain qualifications and improve their job prospects.

The Cottons in Smallbridge is our second development offering affordable housing for shared ownership and rent to buy, designed to help local people who want to get on the property ladder but can't afford to buy outright. The new homes comprise a mix of 39, two, three and four bedroom homes and will be completed in 2020.

The entry to construction course was carried out as part of a social value commitment by both RBH and Galliford Try to provide a wider benefit to the community and to the local economy. 12 people, seven of whom are RBH tenants, completed the course to help kick start their career in construction by gaining necessary qualifications and knowledge. All were successful in passing the course and achieving their CSCS cards.

As a result, three people have gone on to achieve employment within the first month. Galliford Try and RBH contractors, Groundwork Landscapes, Concept Heating, and CES are all providing work experience placements for the other participants to help build on their knowledge, give them practical experience and add to their CVs.

Aine Graven, RBH Social Value Co-ordinator, said:

“Our new developments are not just about the provision of great homes, but also creating a more inclusive economy. That’s why we work with our supply chain partners to create opportunities like this one that support people into work. We’re really proud to have played a part in local people securing higher skills and employment in Rochdale.”

Julie Ferns, Community Engagement & Improvement Officer, said:

“Galliford Try are really pleased to support this initiative to support local people into careers in construction. We’re committed to delivering social value as part of our partnership with RBH and excited about making a real difference in the Smallbridge community.”
