Hygiene

Why is hygiene important?

Hygiene is important as it helps to protect you from infection and keep you fit and healthy. It is also beneficial for your social well-being to have a good standard of hygiene.

How to have a good standard of personal hygiene

Everyone should wash themselves regularly; this will prevent the spread of harmful bacteria and ensure you smell nice and look clean. Most people wash at least once a day; you should also try to wash your hair regularly to prevent it looking and feeling greasy. It is also important to wash your clothes and items such as bedding and towels frequently; this eliminates any odours, removes stains and eradicates bacteria and dust. You should wash your hands regularly; this is particularly important after going to the toilet and before preparing food.

Oral hygiene

It is important to clean your teeth regularly as this will prevent conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day for at least 2 minutes each time. You should also try to floss regularly; this removes any bacteria which may have been missed during brushing. Brushing and using mouthwash also help to ensure you have fresh breath.

Dangers of poor hygiene

Having poor hygiene can contribute to bacterial and viral infections, as well as social embarrassment and a lack of self-esteem. Infections can spread quickly in environments which are not hygienic; it is important to keep yourself and your home as clean as possible at all times. You should take special care when preparing food; this prevents the spread of bacteria and subsequently prevents illness.
