Benefits - Child Tax Credit

What is it?

Child Tax Credit is paid to you if you are responsible for at least one child or a qualifying young person/s.  Child Tax Credit is paid regardless of whether you work or not but the joint income of the household has to be less than £60,000 per year.

Who is eligible?

To qualify for Child Tax Credit the applicant must be over 16 and live in the United Kingdom.  Couples have to make a joint application for Tax Credits.

You can usually claim child tax credits for

  • A new baby
  • Any child who lives with you, until 31st August after their 16th birthday.
  • Children under 20, if they are in full-time education or approved training

If the child or children live with more than one person then only one claim can made and you will need to decide on which person should make the claim.

How much will I get?

The amount of Child Tax Credit received depends on a person’s annual income.
