What is it?
Council Tax Benefit is paid by the Local Authority to help
people on low incomes to pay for their Council Tax.
Who is eligible?
- You are eligible for Council Tax Benefit if your income and
savings are below a certain level.
- If you have savings over £16,000 you will not be able to get
Council Tax Benefit UNLESS you are in receipt of Pension Credit
Guarantee where there is no limit to amount of savings.
- You can apply whether you rent or own your home, or live
rent-free. You could qualify if you are out of work, or in work and
earning a wage.
You may get Second Adult Rebate if the person you share your
home with is:
- Not your partner
- Aged 18 or over
- Not paying you rent
- On a low income
You may be able to get Second Adult Rebate even if you don't
receive Council Tax Benefit.
How much will I get?
The amount of Council Tax Benefit received depends on:
- Household income including earnings, some benefits and tax
credits, occupational pension income. Child benefit is no longer
counted as income, when calculating entitlement.
- Savings
- Circumstances including ages and size of family and any person
with disability in the family.
