We're excited to let you know that we've taken the next step in our plan to create a better future for Lower Falinge and central Rochdale. We've submitted our initial (outline) planning application to the Council for them to consider.
We are asking for permission in principle to build up to 270 brand new homes for affordable or social rent across two sites in Lower Falinge. By providing a different mix of homes including apartments and family homes, these new homes could increase the number of bed spaces in the community by over 300.
These sites are the land near to Redcross Street, which has been empty for many years, and land next to Sheriff Street and Falinge Road. We have already demolished a number of blocks in this area, and our application also asks for permission to demolish the seven remaining blocks in this area. These blocks are at the end of their life and will no longer be able to provide safe, warm homes for our customers.
In addition to the new homes, the application also sets out how we'll create new landscaping, public open spaces, and safer streets. We also want to create new walking routes to make the most of the town centre location.
Our new homes will be modern and energy efficient, designed to meet the Future Homes Standard. They'll be warmer and more comfortable throughout the year, cost less to heat and run, reduce carbon emissions, provide homes for people at different stages of life, and be accessible and adaptable for changing needs.
The application details will appear on the Council's website shortly and we'll share this information as soon as we can so that you can comment on the application and view the full details.
We want to say thank you to everyone who has shared their views with us before we submitted this application. We've spoken to residents, businesses, community groups, and local stakeholders. Our aim is to build new homes that current and future customers will be proud to live in, and strengthen the bonds that already exist within the local community in Lower Falinge and Rochdale town centre. We believe our proposals reflect the priorities of the people who know Lower Falinge best - our customers.
