Our Heywood food pantry has recently celebrated one year of supporting local people by providing a little extra help to pay for food.

To mark the anniversary, members received their weekly bag of food for free and were treated to an additional cupcake and slice of birthday cake, baked by one of the pantry volunteers.

The pantry costs £4 per week and in return provides members with a weekly prepacked bag of quality, nutritious food consisting of bread, eggs, milk, fresh fruit and vegetables. 1004 bags of shopping have been provided to the pantry’s 76 active members over the last twelve months.

Located at Back o’ th’ Moss Community Centre the pantry receives funding from RBH and is run by a group of volunteers with one paid staff member. It was formed following consultation with residents who told us they were struggling to afford good food with some having to choose between buying food or paying for gas and electricity.

Open once a week on a Thursday from 10am – 12 noon and available to all Heywood residents you can become a member by filling in a short form or coming along to one of the sessions.

This year has flown by and has been a learning curve. During that year we have recruited two volunteers, and without them the pantry would not have become the success it is today. We are very pleased as we have recently exceeded our 100th pantry member and look forward to the next twelve months providing affordable quality food to the Heywood community
